Interpreting Chinese Astrology

Chinese astrology provides a way of interpreting different personality types based on the year in which the person was born. Unlike the western zodiac which features a new sign every month, with the same sequence yearly, the Chinese zodiac signs change once a year. There are twelve in all, and they rotate – that is, after all twelve astrology signs have occurred, the sequence starts again at the beginning of the following year. The Chinese lunar New Year, therefore, is the time at which the zodiac sign changes as well.

All of the Chinese zodiac signs are animals. They are as follows: Rat, Pig, Ox, Dog, Tiger, Rooster, Rabbit, Monkey, Dragon, Horse, Snake and Goat. So, if a person is born in the year of the Rooster, for example, his sign is the rooster, and he has ‘rooster’ characteristics and personality traits. That is one way in which this astrology system is similar to the western zodiac – one’s personality traits are considered to be a product of one’s astrology sign. Thus, all individuals born in the same year or under the same signs are said to share certain core personality traits, because of having been born under that particular ambient energy.

The Chinese zodiac resembles the western system in one other way, too – some signs are compatible with each other, or make an auspicious union, whereas others do not. Furthermore, some do well if joined with others of the same sign, while other signs are incompatible if joined in this way. This means that if we are to take astrology seriously, we could use it to determine our life path as well as choose a potential partner, mate, friend or co-worker for the most peaceful, productive union. As with western astrology, people differ greatly with regard to how seriously they regard this zodiac system and its implications.
