Feng Shui - Bring Health, Wealth and Happiness Into Your Life

Choosing the Right Feng Shui Colors

Choosing feng shui colors is more complicated than you might think. In the west, we have a general idea of colors that are associated with good feng shui – red, gold, and quiet or peaceful colors such as blue, for instance – but it is possible to use even these auspicious colors incorrectly. Choosing colors according to feng shui involves a number of variables.

The first of these variables is your personal feng shui. Different colors work for different people, and for the most part, this is a function of when you were born. Everybody has a personal ‘KUA’ number that depends on their gender and birth date, and this is like your personal feng shui number – it determines what will and will not work for you in terms of feng shui. To find your KUA number, first consult a lunar calendar to find your ‘real’ birth year. Because the Chinese new year is a little different from the western one, a person born in January of 1969, for example, may have a 1968 birth date according to the lunar calendar. Next, add the last two digits of your birth year until they form a single digit. For instance, 6+8 = 14, and 1+4 = 5. Finally, if you are a man, subtract this number from 10 (which gives you 5); if you are a woman, add 5 to this number. If you end up with a double digit number, add to reduce it to one digit. Therefore, the KUA number for a man born in 1968 is 5, and for a woman it is 1.

Your KUA number will determine which colors are good for you to wear and to have around you in your home according to the principles of feng shui. For example, someone with a KUA number of  1 is influenced by the element wood, and green is a good color for that person.

In a feng shui interior, the correct color selection is also determined in part by where in the room it occurs. What is good in the south corner, for example, is not so auspicious in the north or the west. However, this should always be in balance with your own personal colors as determined by your KUA number. Red may be good in the southwest, for example, but not for a ‘wood’ person, to whom it is destructive.

Finally, different colors and shapes go together, and again this is governed by your own feng shui KUA number. This seems like a lot of things to consider – and it is, of course. However, it will eventually become second nature. Most importantly, you should pay attention to how your feel around different colors – do they make you happy or depressed? Do you get a lot done in a certain type of environment? These questions are very relevant to feng shui and the effective use of color.
